Add the flooring price, and installation if you are hiring a pro, to see the budget.
How we got this: Flooring: 180 sq ft × 1.10 = 198 sq ft × price. Labor, underlayment and removal use the floor area; trim uses the perimeter (54 ft).
Get at least three installation quotes: prices vary a lot by area and by how much subfloor prep the job needs.
How the calculation works
- Flooring. Floor area plus waste, times your price per square foot (or m²).
- Labor and extras. Installation, underlayment and removal are priced on the floor area itself, because installers do not charge for your waste.
- Trim. Priced on the room perimeter.
- Range. No waste, with waste, and with a 10% contingency for surprises such as subfloor repairs.
Imperial example: a 12 × 15 ft room (180 sq ft) with $4 flooring, $2.50 installation, $0.50 underlayment, $1 removal and $1.50 trim per foot comes to $1,593, or $8.85 per sq ft.
Metric example: a 4 × 5 m room (20 m²) with £25 flooring and £15 installation per m² comes to £850, or £42.50 per m².

Common mistakes
- Comparing flooring on the shelf price alone. Cheap planks that need glue-down installation can cost more overall.
- Pricing labor on the waste allowance. Installers charge for the floor area, not the boxes you buy.
- Leaving out removal and disposal of the old floor.
- Skipping a contingency. Lifting an old floor often reveals subfloor repairs.
What else you'll need
- At least three written installation quotes, each listing what is included.
- A check of the subfloor before you order: flatness and moisture.
- The quantity calculators for your floor type, to check the boxes on the quote.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to install flooring per square foot?
It varies a lot by material, area and subfloor condition. Enter the prices from your own quotes; we do not use made-up averages.
Should waste be included in the flooring cost?
Yes, for the material: you pay for the boxes you buy. Not for labor, which is priced on the floor area.
How much contingency should I add?
10% is a common rule for flooring. Add more for old houses, where the subfloor is more likely to need work.
Is it cheaper to install flooring myself?
Usually, if you have the tools and time. Leave the installation price empty to see the DIY cost, then add a quote to compare.
